Welcome to the first ever Daventry Arts Festival, which takes place 18-23 July 2011. The festival sees a week of exciting, entertaining and fun arts events and activities, including drama, comedy, poetry, orchestral music, and a special event celebrating Daventry as the place where the BBC World Service was born. There will also be a carnival procession, an all day folk/world music concert, and a local talent competition, so there is something for everyone and we hope to see the town buzzing all week. And don’t miss Shedman, our resident poet, who will be in his shed all week at the entrance to the New Street Recreation Ground!
Our special BBC World Service event features Terry Waite and his cousin, broadcaster John Waite, who made programmes specifically to be heard by Terry Waite, knowing he was able to listen to the World Service in captivity. They will talk about the importance of the World Service to them both.
Our visiting artists include VIVA Sinfonia orchestra, Yorkshire poet, broadcaster and comedian Ian McMillan, Cartoonist of the Year Tony Husband, acoustic band Paper Aeroplanes, comedy swing whoopee band Hot Potato Syncopators, folk/world music band Sheelanagig, a double bill from Leicester Comedy Festival and drama from Northants Touring Arts. The festival is a partnership project between Daventry Business Partnership and Field Day Arts CIC, with the aim of bringing exciting, high quality arts to the town. We are grateful to our festival funders which include Arts Council England, Daventry Business Partnership, Northamptonshire County Council and Legacy Trust UK.
Daventry Arts Festival is part of Igniting Ambition, a Cultural Olympiad programme in the East Midlands which invests in projects and people that take the London 2012 Games as their inspiration to create once-in-a-lifetime cultural opportunities for audiences and communities. Igniting Ambition is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the European Regional Development Fund and the East Midlands Development Agency, with the support of Arts Council England and many others.
